A week or so ago, I went with friends to a old Edo era restaurant, in a kura style building.
It was just near Tokyo Tower, which for some reason was lit up blue that night.
The food came out in a lacquer box. What was inside?
Unagi! Eel!
Nodaiwa is an eel restaurant in Kamiya-cho. All courses (some of which are quite expensive) include eel, including eel jelly, broiled eel on rice beds. Great with beer. The above photo is first course.
When we left, we were shown the kitchen, which had a corner that looked like an open shower with water trickling down on stacked, round black plastic tubs. When the lid was lifted off one of these tubs, the eels inside slithered around not happy at being disturbed. I’m not sure how soon the eels are dispatched before they end up on the tables – probably a very sharp knife.
Apologies for mobile phone photos – I forgot to take my other camera with me.
