Today was 48 degrees celsius and possibly higher. Oh my god, it was HOT. I have never experienced weather anything like it. It was so hot that the road surface started melting.
This was my first time on the Nullarbor, driving around 500km from Ceduna to Eucla, which is just over the border into Western Australia.
This stretch of road travels through stereotypical Nullarbor scenery – nothing growing higher than your ankles and flat as far as you can see. The continent just comes to an end at the cliff lines along the Great Australian Bight and drops sheer down into the ocean. We got out for short walks at some of the cliff top lookouts – which were stunning – but it felt like we were in an oven due to the heat. The ocean below was remarkably calm in such hot weather. The road surface was getting soft and felt like driving through slush. We had to get tar and bitumen spray cleaned off the car when we arrived in Perth.
Our car coped admirably, the air con kept functioning. We arrived in Eucla and we went straight into our airconditioned room. When the cool change came through, I never imagined that 38 degrees would feel that cool.
