For my summer holidays last week, I spent a week in Mongolia. It turned out to be a bit of a short adventure.
While I work on putting together a trip report, here’s a preview and gallery of some of the highlights.
I got bumped off a domestic flight because of a Thai princess changing her plans, and was therefore marooned in a place called Moron for 24 hours until the next flight out.
I fed lichen to some reindeer and met their nomadic owners in their yurt, rode horses and a two-humped camel, drank airag (fermented mare’s milk), visited Chinggis Khaan’s 13th century capital Karakorum and some bronze-age monuments in the middle of the steppe, met a world-champion of the Georgian wrestling style Kuresh when visiting his family’s ger, got stuck in the middle of nowhere when our Russian jeep broke down, survived bone-jarring roads (if you can even call them roads), and had quite a hairy landing back at Narita on Sunday night in a typhoon.
All that’s before I mention the stunning scenery and wonderfully friendly people along the way.
