Hiroto has a big pet beetle. He feeds it apple skins. It’s common for Japanese kids (especially boys) to catch and look after beetles in summer.

A stereotypical gaijin shinkansen moment
Taking this photo made me look like the typical foreigner… But I did it because a blog about living in Japan probably needs at least one Shinkansen photo.

Old Tokyo tram
Even Tokyo takes pride in its old tramways. This is a museum piece marking the site of an old line in Bunkyo-ku, near Ueno.
Hibiya Park Bento
Today’s around 35 degrees, still humid. A great way to spend lunchtime is to buy a bento at the shop behind the office, and head over to Hibiya Park. The cicadas are chirping, a brass band is practising, and I found a tree to sit under in the shade with a breeze.

The best way to unwind after work, especially after a thunderous humid day.
Meguro natsu matsuri
Stumbled on the Meguro summer festival in Nakameguro on the way home from a friend’s house this evening. Summer in Japan is good fun.
